Islands in a Dream

Twitter and NSFW

Have you checked your Twitter account settings lately? There have been a few changes to some preferences lately. For one, you may decide only to see media from those you follow or from everyone. More significantly, Twitter has added a bit more meta-data to each tweet. This meta-data designates whether or not the material being posted contains “sensitive” material. First, you may decide whether or not you wish to see such material, and, second, if your tweets themselves should be tagged as being “sensitive”.

Given the current debate over NSFW content, freedom of speech, and privacy, Facebook and Google+ may not be faring so well. However, Twitter seems to have quietly made an adjustment in there service which may, in part, address these issues. Time will tell just how effective the changes are, and whether they create more problems than they solve.
